Bad Baby Brother
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (April, 1997)
Author: Martha Weston
Average review score:

Cute book with a sweet message for older siblings
This cute little book is ideal for an older sibling who wonders how things will change when a new baby comes to live with the family. The book also includes a very nice, appealing portrayal of breastfeeding and how older siblings will still get Mama's attention while baby is nursing.

A great book for children with baby siblings.
This book will teach kids that having a baby brother or sister isn't all that bad. This book shows that if children just wait, their baby sibling might actually be fun to play with when they are older.

Grandmother from Massachusetts
Great fun! Activities require very easily accessible materials that educate and entertain. We took this book to a family reunion and had everyone from age 8 to 88 trying to do the experiments the scientific experts claim are Impossible. Now, every time my grandchildren (ages 6 and 10)visit, this is the first book they drag off the shelf. This is a timeless winner!

This is a great book full of science challenges.
Bet You Can't is a wonderful tool for teachers and students. Science is presented as fun challenges. It can be used in the classroom setting in many ways--as independent centers, and as science process presentations. Students are amazed at the activities. This book helps students understand science in a fun.

Bloody Hell: The Price Soldiers Pay
Published in Paperback by Plough Publishing House (September, 1999)
Authors: Dan Hallock, Simon Weston, and Daniel William Hallock
Average review score:

Good book for teenagers!
The military services spend tens of millions of dollars on advertising to attract young people to their ranks. Supported by school guidance counselors as a prime career option the system enlists hundreds of thousands of low income teens. What happens next? Read this book to understand why such a high proportion of our nation's homeless and mentally ill are veterans. This pocket sized paperback is based on a larger hardcover version called Hell, Healing and Resistance.

Profoundly disturbing
This book gave me great insight into the trauma to people's lives as a result of war and the war machine. It is profoundly written and the subject is sensitively handled. I'm sure not everyone will agree with the author's view point, but it sure helped me to have better understanding for the war veterans I come in contact with.

China Beyond the Headlines
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (22 March, 2000)
Authors: Timothy B. Weston, Lionel M. Jensen, Timonthy B. Weston, and Geremie R. Barme
Average review score:

Go beyond the soundbites
This is a significant book that does more than bring together a number of apposite and informative papers to provide a comprehensive picture of China at the turn of the century. The volume as a whole engages with and interrogates the environments of information, political representation and policy choice behind the headlines or soundbites, popular perceptions of the "other" and the role that scholars play in their production and interpretation. In this respect it is a self-reflexive volume of professional interest within and beyond the China field.

--China Quarterly

Scholars and interested lay people who have never lived in China should read this book. So should politicians, journalists and government officials working on China.

--The China Journal

China Without Stereotypes
Editors Weston and Jensen have set a high goal for themselves, eschew the highly polarized and stereotypical American debate about China and look into what is happening in the last major economy to experience modernization. In their introductory essay they make the point that contact between the US and China has never had the breadth and depth it has now. The exchange of people and ideas is significant. They remind the reader that the Chinese and American societies share a sense of exceptionalism than can be the basis of cooperation and confusion. Wasserstrom underlines the anti-intellectualism of treating China in either/or 'paralying polarities'. Each author in turn discusses some facet of Chinese society, economy, or culture and how it is faring under the stress of modernization. Each essay presents the reader with the realization that China and its new leaders face daunting problems. Whatever China's goals energy needs, environmental degradation, and new identities may be more than speed bumps on the road to modernization. Real problems realistically reviewed is the fulfilled promise of this volume.

Great Aperture Book
Wow, a photography book that you do not have to buy with a loan application or perfect credit. Weston was such a commanding presence in so many photographic fields, and this overview of his work is great. One quibble: I wish there had been better ties between the women in his life and the nudes featured here. Who was who? Also, his bio mentions the last photo he took, but does not include it. Other than that, great work by a great artist and a great inspiration.

A Summation of a Spectacu
If you were to only buy one of Edward Weston's books, this would be the one -- and for less then $10...

For Teens Only : Quotes, Notes, & Advice You Can Use
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (26 November, 2002)
Author: Carol Weston
Average review score:

A real treasure trove!
I don't care what kind of advice you're looking for -- whether you're trying to fix a romance, a summer job, or a problem at school -- this book has got something helpful to say. Carol Weston herself is terrific -- practical and funny -- but the book also insludes quotes and advice from a lot of other people, too -- famous writers, artists, thinkers. It's a lot better than just hearing your best friend, for the tenth time, tell you the same old things. A definite recommend!

I LOVE this book!
FOR TEENS ONLY is so good!... Whenever I get depressed or frustrated, I read a few pages and start feeling better. I guess that's because she seems like a real person (well, obviously she is) and because all the quotes seem to be talking right to me. My brother has been reading it too and he doesn't usually read books like this. But her advice make sense and isn't preachy. It's funny and inspiring. I recommend this book to all middle school and high school students. It REALLY explains everything, from how to tell if your crush likes you to when to use "it's" and "its"(which I now finally get)! And if you ever need a quote for a yearbook or paper, it has 580! FOR TEENS ONLY IS A GREAT BOOK!! FIVE STARS AT LEAST!...

Managing Successful Science Fair Projects: A Step-By-Step Approach
Published in Paperback by J Weston Walch (April, 1996)
Authors: Patricia Hachten Wee and J Weston
Average review score:

science fair life saver
Believe it or not, I am a high school biology teacher that has never done a science fair project before, and now I am in charge of our local science fair! I found this book by accident, and it is amazing. It is a complete step-by-step guide for both the teacher and the students. I plan on using it this year, and I just know the quality of the projects will be so much better with the tips and guidelines for the students. What is great is that it is geared toward high school students, so it is challenging yet simple enough to understand.

A Must-Have Science Fair Reference
As a librarian who helps advise students through the research process, I have found Ms. Wee's book to be invaluable. Her experience in science fairs shines through in her step-by-step intructions on how to manage science fair projects. This source is a lifesaver for any science fair advisor, student, librarian and/or parent dealing with the 14 steps of the inquiry-method approach of a science fair project. Included in the book are reproducible pages for schedules, checklists, fourteen tip sheets and worksheets to help guide a student through all stages of the project. Every school library should have at least one copy of this management tool.

Nate the Great and the Big Sniff
Published in Library Binding by Delacorte Press (11 September, 2001)
Authors: Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, Mitchell Sharmat, Martha Weston, and Marc Simont
Average review score:

Missing: Detective Partner!
Nate the Great is a detective and a guy known for being able to find lost things or solve mysteries. However, in NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF, Nate experiences his most personal mystery of all when Sludge, his dog, detective partner, and best friend, ends up lost in Weinman Brothers, Nate's favorite store. Since no dogs are allowed in the store, Nate has to leave Sludge outside. Nate goes inside to buy a gift for Sludge and has to stand in a really long line. Worried about his doggy partner, Nate goes back to the entrance to check on Sludge and finds that Sludge is gone!

Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress.

NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF is written as a chapter book, something the last few books in the series have changed to. The change is welcome because the chapters provide brief bits that can be read while on the go, and they all end up with cliffhanger endings that make the young reader want to pick the book up again or the young listener want to sit down and hear more. As always, the author presents a very real mystery with very real possible solutions before ultimately solving Nate's latest case. The usual cast of Annie and Fang and Rosamond show up in the story, and Claude puts in an appearance to round out the neighborhood. The way that all of the group bands together to help Nate find Sludge is really great and heart-warming. Over the years, Nate has been bothered by these people, or presented hard mysteries by them, and it's good to see that they help him out when he needs it, and that they actually care about Sludge. When the case is finally solved, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchell Sharmat reveal that Sludge is every bit the detective that Nate is. The full color illustrations by Martha Weston are detailed and expressive. This is a truly great book for young readers and parents who love to read aloud to pre-readers.

Young readers will enjoy the whole Nate the Great series because the tales are told in a familiar fashion and involve a solid cast of characters that return book after book. These books are also some of the best to choose for read-alouds to pre-readers or for the last story before bedtime because they can be read in just a few moments. The Nate the Great mysteries are fun and addictive for both parent and child.

Can Nate think like a dog to solve the case?
Nate is a great detective and depends on his dog to help him solve cases. But Sludge is lost inside a department store, and this time Nat's on his own in solving the case of a missing best friend. Can Nate think like a dog to solve the case?

Excellent Book
This book is just simply fabulous. It is hilarious and the two twins are perfect characters for the book. Gordon Korman did an excellent job writing this book. I can't believe how magnificently written this book was. This book is and always will be one of my favorite books.

Side-Splitting Funny; a laugh you won't want to put down.
Gordon Korman twists a tale of intruige around a hysterically funny plot. A must read for spy buffs and comedy fans alike. If you liked MacDonald Hall, then you'll love this book.
